Listopedia: Chasing the Sun around the World
Whether you want to feel the warm glow of sunset while you sip sundowners or spend as many hours sprawled out on the sand as possible, here’s our month by month Listopedia of destinations where the sun will shine.
January: Sydney, Australia
From Christmas Eve until Australia Day, Sydney seems to slow down. The streets are quiet, school is out and the beaches are at their best. Start out with a patch of sand at Bondi Beach before moving your way south on the Bondi to Coogee headland walk, with dips at Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly along the way.
February: Maunganui Beach, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand
The spot to see and be seen! Mount Maunganui is always buzzing in Summer. The beach sits at the base of the Mauao Volcano, dormant and a popular hiking track for locals.
March: Koh Samui, Thailand
Maximise your chances of sunshine in the month of March – the end of the rainy season and the start of the dryer months in Koh Samui. Grab a cocktail by the pool or spend the day in your private plunge pool away from the crowds.
April: Great Barrier Reef, Queensland
Shake off the post-Summer blues with a few days of glorious sunshine in Tropical North Queensland. Hop on a helicopter and see the Great Barrier Reef sparkling a brilliant aquamarine in the sun.
May: Nova Scotia, Canada
Go lighthouse-hopping while the sun is out in this peaceful part of the world. There’s plenty of them hugging the Nova Scotia coastline, from Louisbourg to Cape Forchu. The coastal towns in between are achingly adorable.
June: Fjordland, Norway
The land of the Midnight Sun, Norway becomes a 24-hour playground for a few weeks in high summer. Make the most of the extra hours of daylight – kayak, hike, swim or even golf into the early hours of morning.
July: Cornwall, UK
It may not have the hottest summers, but Cornwall has a charm of its own. The sunlight is soft and dappled, falling on quaint B&B’s and tea gardens. Take afternoon tea – scones with clotted cream – before catching a performance in the marvelous open air Minack Theatre.
August: Tuscany, Italy
Sunshine can be enjoyed far from the seaside. Drive through the towns of Tuscany, stopping in sunflower fields and sun-kissed vineyards. Soak up the dry heat with a crisp bottle of white wine and a caprese salad.
September: Hvar, Croatia
Watch the sun glint off the sails of a yacht while you bob in crystal clear waters of the Adriatic. Come ashore for cocktails in beach clubs along Hvar’s rocky shore.
October: Yucatan, Mexico
Head for the beaches of the Riviera Maya when the Spring Break crowd is nowhere in sight. Enjoy the last few hours of sunshine at a bar on the beach after an afternoon siesta, with an icy margarita and a bowl of fresh ceviche.
November: Kaua’i, Hawaii, US
Pop a frangipani in your hair and explore this lush island while the sun is out – whether it’s by yacht, foot, quad bike or convertible, Kaua’i is stunning in November.
December: Beaver Creek, Colorado, US
Swap your ski goggles for sunglasses at this Colorado ski resort that claims to have 300 days of sunshine a year. Zip through the pine trees onto groomed runs under brilliant sunshine and crisp blue skies.
